"For decades we've known that David Zippel is an expert lyricist; his Tony for City of Angels is Exhibit A. But who knew that he was such a smart and incisive director, too? That was proved by his guiding and staging his sterling J2 Spotlight revival of The Goodbye Girl -- the 1993 musical for which he had provided lyrics. Back then, the musical didn't make it, but leave it to Zippel to see where the problems were and eradicate them from this production. What's more, Zippel has the added burden of having to replace an ailing Santino Fontana with another actor. If theater had a Reliever of the Year Award as baseball does, Dan De Luca would have won without many voters even considering anyone else. But some part of De Luca's magnificent achievement -- and leading lady Sierra Boggess' triumph, too -- must be attributed to Zippel for steering them to success. The Goodbye Girl was was easily one of the best revival of the 2022-2003 season -- and yes, I saw every musical revival that Broadway offered, too.”
